AppSec Is A Communication Problem Too
Technical findings only matter when they can move through real teams and become durable fixes.
Application security is technical work, but the hard part is often communication.
Finding a vulnerability matters. Explaining it well enough that the right people can fix it matters more. The difference between those two things is where a lot of security programs either earn trust or quietly lose it.
Reports Are Interfaces
A security report is an interface between teams. It has to carry enough technical detail for an engineer to reproduce the issue, enough risk context for a product or business owner to prioritize it, and enough clarity that nobody has to guess what the next step should be.
That means the report should answer plain questions:
- What happened?
- Why is it possible?
- What can an attacker do with it?
- How did we prove it safely?
- What should change?
- How can we verify the fix?
When those questions are answered cleanly, remediation gets less theatrical and more practical.
Cross-Team Context
Security work touches developers, systems teams, QA, operations, support, and leadership. Each group sees a different slice of the same system. If those slices never get connected, risk hides in the handoffs.
That is why I care about cross-departmental education. Teams do not need to become experts in everyone else’s job, but they do need enough shared vocabulary to ask better questions earlier. Secure SDLC work is mostly making those better questions show up before production.
The Fix Has To Stick
A finding is not really closed when the ticket moves columns. It is closed when the system is harder to break in the same way again. Sometimes that means a code change. Sometimes it means a test, a pattern, a library, a review checklist, a pipeline guardrail, or a design conversation that should have happened sooner.
The best appsec work leaves the team stronger than it found it.
